Across the swamp, a Black-crowned Night Heron rested in the shade under his naturally created ‘tiki umbrella’.

Great shot. I think the best views I have ever gotten of a black crowned night heron were in the Everglades at Shark Valley, across the canal, and in a park in Oakland, CA, where they were almost tame, sitting in trees and on fences near Lake Merritt.
Thanks Susan! My best, too, have been in the Everglades last year. I’ve got a few places I’ve not visited yet that have a canal running along the road, like Shark Valley, where I found many. Need to get over there!
Striking pose 😊. Very nice, Donna!
Thank you, Belinda! I had to leave after the photograph, he was sleeping when I first saw him, I think I was getting a frown out of him…. hehe
Oh I do like herons, and in this shot the foliage is really lovely too. A handy umbrella, as you say!
Thank you, Sel! I bet that’s a favorite perch of his/hers! 😉
The sun can be harsh. Birds need shade too! Just needs a margarita.
You are so right, and yes, the scene just needs a margarita! 🍹 😁
“Tiki umbrella”-cute. Nice capture, Donna.
Thank you, Jane!
The BCNH are very quiet and they hardly move, they love to be become invisible during the day. You did a great job to catch the details in the shade. Thanks, Donna. I miss FL when it’s cold here. 🙂
Thank you, HJ! At first I didn’t see it, it had its head tucked down napping. Most definitely almost invisible if you’re not looking hard! 🙂
Nice shot Donna. Night Herons are not the easiest birds to take as they tend to hide out of the light during the day.
Thank you, Ashley! They are good hiders during the day for sure. 🙂
Sweet shot – Waiting for the bartender!
😉 Thanks Eliza!
Really seems to be trying to hide. Glad you spotted it and got the shot. 😊
Thanks, Irene! I’m sure s/he was glad I moved on, so it could go back to hiding and snoozing. 🙂
this is so beautiful so beautiful… Thank you, Love, nia
Thank you, Nia!
Ooh…a shy heron! Still you managed it, Donna! 🙂
The looks told me, “hey you’re interrupting my siesta!” 😉
Good hiding place! I love those large yellow feet. 🙂 Nice picture, Donna!
Thank you, Barbara!
Very Nice Donna! Another One of my favorite birds to photograph!
Thank you, Reed!
Nicely done dealing with all that shade.
Thank you, Deborah!
This guy has found himself a natural umbrella away from the heat. Cute how it is peeking out so we can see the eye.
He’s questioning with that eye, “where’s the margarita?” 😉
Nice scene, love the foot up and palm fronds like an umbrella over him.
Thank you, Ellen! Happy Hour!
Oh yes!
