Sandhill Crane

.

Sandhill Cranes are considered a rare sighting for the mid-Atlantic States.  One had been seen off and on during the summer near my daughter’s home in Delaware, and most notably at Bombay Hook NWR, ten miles east of her.  Several times my son-in-law texted or told me he saw it fly over their home, but I could never sight it in my goings back and forth.

Until two weeks ago!  Yay!!

Sandhill Cranes are approximately the same height as a Great Blue Heron only bulkier.

Fun and games with my 6 year old grandson and then a regionally rare bird sighting one minute after leaving had me on Cloud 9 all the way home!

    • I was playing baseball, lol, throwing pitches and hoping my 6 yo grandson didn’t nail me with a line drive. 😂 Thank you, Indira, it was a fabulous time, and then to see this bird! Wow!! 😊

  1. A wonderful find Donna. It is great you have you family of spotters on deck to help. We find our family and friends sometimes are our best spotters. That Cranes look so much like our Brolga and the Saris Crane which are found in the top end of our country.

  2. These cranes were the first bunch birds I saw in this part of Florida, it called my attention when I saw them in open fields. They are so cool! Great photos, Donna. 🙂

  3. Very cool! I’ve read that they have been seen in Maine and are moving into more of the Northeast in summer. I’ve only seen them in FL in the winter. They are majestic birds– excellent shots, Donna!

    • Thank you, Eliza! I, too, had only seen them in Florida plus Indiana, so this was a real treat. I’ve heard the sightings increasing in the northeast, that is very cool indeed!! 🙂

  4. I am having troubles making comments again. I do get your posts in my email but when I try to comment, WordPress wants me to sign in, but that does not work. want me to sign in, When I came to “Reader” the first time, I was told to sign in , and had to enter a number but that did not work until the second attempt. Makes me want to quit WordPress. Now that I am here, the photos are great! and happy you got to spend time with family, especially grandson.

    • Glad you made it, Jane, thank you for all the extra effort. I took a three-week break unintentionally and was truly hoping the commenting issue was resolved by now. 🙁 I’m having the same issue with some blogs still, and it makes me want to quite WP as well. We all spend valuable time with WP blogs as a healthy hobby and this commenting stress isn’t worth it.
