What fun! 😊
All duck close-up photos were taken January 2026 at the Oakley Street waterfront in Cambridge, Maryland.
Any given day you don’t know what you’ll find there. Missing my trip were Canvasbacks, Greater Scaup, Buffleheads, and even a possible Redhead or two.
Locals throw corn out often, drawing the winter ducks year after year. The ducks know a good, safe feeding spot when they find it! And it’s definitely a waterfowl photographer’s delight!

Just aim and shoot at a 180 degree view of ducks!

They are all pretty. Ducks and geese!
Thank you!
What a fun way to teach the difference. Love the inquisitive look of the Lesser Scaup (male). 😁
Thank you, Pepper! 😊
To think such magical creatures exist in the world, going about their business, floating, listening, probably…ready to scoop up a bit of lunch or a quick jump skyward and out of harm’s way
These are all so beautiful! Really cute! 💛💛💛
Thank you!
Those are magnificent Donna
Thank you, Sheree!
Wow so many waterbirds. The picture of the lesser scaup staring at you is adorable. Maggie
Thank you, Maggie!
You win.
Terrific collection, despite the fowl language.
High-five, Wally! 😁
This made me laugh! I will never forget messing up with naming geese. Great ducks with so much personality in their pics. Thanks Donna.
Thank you, Sandy, so happy you enjoyed!
What a fabulous array of birds and photos! The mallard portrait and the lesser scaup giving you the eye are really terrific 😊
Thank you, Belinda! 😊
A lovely showcase of water birds we never see here Donna
Thank you, Ashley!
LOL! That Lesser Scaup’s face looking at you is hilarious! You saw all the geese and so many great ducks! I loved playing along with this post!!
I thought I had a Greater Scaup on the 13th at a local pond but, the eBird mod said maybe not and had me change my finding to a Greater/Lesser Scaup because he thinks there maybe a flat bit to the back of the head and more purple in the feathers so more a Lesser than Greater. What a bummer! The Greater would have a Lifer for me. I have seen a few Canvasbacks which is always nice.
I also had a Hybrid Eurasian X American Wigeon. A first for me anywhere. This winter has been great birding hasn’t it.
Thank you, Deborah, I’m glad you enjoyed playing along! Don’t you just love a head-tilt on a curious bird?!! Oh darn on the Greater Scaup. It’s a bummer when we hear from eBird mods lol! I have photographed an Eurasian Wigeon, we had one in Delaware that I was able to locate by I’ve never seen a wigeon hybrid!
It was a first for me too. It has the buff stripe on it face, rufous feathers on the head and back of its head but, its cheeks are spotted like the American Wigeon’s. It’s pretty too.
Fun post, Donna! I esp. enjoyed the handsome ducks. 🙂
Thank you, Eliza! 😊
This is a fun game. I cannot tell the difference from a duck or a goose. I’m happy that you can ID them! I especially get a giggle out of #12. Lesser Scaup (male) Goose. Love his expression!
Thank you, Teri! Oh that curious Lesser Scaup head-tilt tickled me too!!
Wow – what a collection you have for this game, er … post Donna. How nice that someone feeds them and the waterfowl photographers have it ready made for pictures. I like them all, so many ducks I’ve never seen and the White-fronted Goose included. Those iridescent Mallard heads – you captured that perfectly, but my favorite duck is the Lesser Scaup giving you the business. What a look!
Thank you, Linda, glad you enjoyed the game! The Lesser Scaup did make me giggle, and not having another duck in the way was perfect! Great place to get lots of close-ups, you just have to take a lot because other ‘speeding around’ ducks keep photo-bombing your shots 🤣
Yes, I did enjoy the game Donna and remember it from when I was younger as well. It was perfect, like it posed for you and said, here I am … I’ll give you this pose for your blog, complete with a quizzical tilt of my head. 🙂
🤗😊🤗
What a bag!
Thank you, IJ!
Stunning portraits, especially the male Lesser Scaup – what a facial expression!
Thank you, Barbara! That Lesser Scaup showed some personality, didn’t he?!! 😊
A fine duck gallery. I am envious of your variety as we only have one sort here.
Thank you, Tom! Our summers are lean with duck varieties; but during winter migration, we are super lucky with all the beautiful ducks that arrive from Canada
A fun game with literal ducks and geese, Donna! Great shots!
Thank you, Terri!
Lovely shots of ducks and geese – the front on male Scaup cracked me up. Do you get Cackling Goose mixed in with your Canada out there?
Thank you! Yes, we do get Cacklings mixed in the Canadas. I actually saw/photographed one this past January but the photo wasn’t very good so I didn’t include it in this post. 😉
Very nice series of images Donna! Enjoyed seeing them!
Thank you, Reed!
These are some great photos!
Thank you very much!
You’re welcome!
