1-2-3 Cute As Can Be – #39

The last couple months of extreme cold & snow/icy conditions kept my bird feeders busy; sometimes I slipped out to my back porch for a few shots.  Then run back inside, ha!

Processing to make them a little artsy, here are some of my favorites for another series of cuteness.

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Carolina Chickadee

Song Sparrow

Dark-eyed Junco (top) and Red-breasted Nuthatch (bottom)

“No, no, I didn’t do this!”

  1. These are all marvelous shots. As I scrolled, I wondered if you had squirrel problems. I got my answer in the last photo. I miss having even a White-breasted Nuthatch this year. I just got off a Zoom with friends in Ohio who love to feed birds. Their first question was about my bird counts. Sadly, both the number of species and the number of the species that do show up are way down. As harsh as the winter has been, they, too, reported a large absence of birds, and they live in a rural setting with plenty of cover and water for birds.

    • Thank you, Bruce! Oh boy, do I have squirrel problems. Two families. I keep my eye on the feeders and go out/clap my hands when the squirrels are around or on the feeders. They usually run away to the woods, but I know they’ll be back. lol One of the squirrels tore down the ‘donut’ suet and took off with it. That squirrel family is eating well right now….stinkers.

Sorry to hear your low numbers. The winter has been harsh, I have local birders who had low numbers too. I actually still had great counts this winter at my feeders and backyard area, and I believe it’s my location. About 100 ft behind my feeders is a left-to-right 50 ft deep, thick old tree line of pin oaks, marsh shrubs, pines, evergreens, persimmons, all loaded with wild berries and nuts; behind that is a marsh and pond. I live on a ‘point of land’ that congregates birds well for migration seasons. For the fall, it’s a long way if they choose to continue to fly to go over the Chesapeake Bay. I think they say, “Whew, let’s just stop here for the winter! Food is good!”

    • Thank you, Eliza! Yes, they are rascals! Re the cardinal/finch dual shot, I took a couple dozen photos trying to get them both more direct to the lens. They definitely weren’t in sync for 95% of those, too much chomping and grabbing another seed. I lucked out LOL!

  2. I like all the photos Donna – nice close-ups. I also like the feeders, especially the top two. I think I have seen the snowman character advertised on Wild Birds Unlimited. The first feeder looks like a donut with sprinkles and is so colorful. I’ve never seen a Red-breasted Nuthatch, just the White-breasted Nuthatch. They are all grateful to you for the food in the dead of Winter. It is easy for you to get photos since it is your own yard. 🙂 Squirrel shenanigans – yes, I used to deal with them when I fed the birds. They will hang upside down, wrap themself around the feeder until they knock it down or break it, even if you give them food as well.

    • Thank you, Linda! Nuthatches are really cute, we have three: Red-breasted, White-breasted, and Brown-headed. Do you get the Brown-headed? He’s tiny and sounds like a squeaky toy when singing!

I got the snowman and donut suets for Christmas from my grandboys. 😊 The donut is now gone, a squirrel knocked it down and took off with it, that rascal! The donut was cute fun while it lasted. The snowman was knocked down two days ago, I laughed that it was too big to run with, and I’ve rehung it. It’s still up right now and slowly disappearing.

      • Donna, I didn’t know there were Brown-headed Nuthatches. I’d better clean my eyeglasses better when I go out birding this Summer. 🙂 That was a thoughtful gift from the grandboys – colorful and cute! The squirrels are also cute, but so mischievous sometimes. Years ago I grew a sunflower in the backyard. It was the only one that “took” in the garden. I had some smaller ones in pots and the goldfinches were enjoying them. The big sunflower grew taller than the neighbor behind’s garage. I imagined going out one day and seeing the birds feasting on the “pan” part, but it was top heavy and instead I went out to water one morning and the sunflower was face up and the squirrels were digging in greedily instead – sigh!

    • Thank you, Sue! My song sparrow is at the feeders every single day, s/he’s fearless, not going to let any other bird intimidate it to leaving, lol. I love its coloring, and it loves the teal colored feed too, I’ve gotten so many great shots of it chomping away, almost identical shots every day LOL!

    • Thank you, Barbara! I enjoyed watching the birdies, knowing they were refueling constantly to stay warm and survive. They seemed so happy! Must admit, the squirrels were happy too, LOL! My 8 yo grandson told me, “Grammy, they gotta eat and drink too!”
