Gray Catbird

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasant surprise to see my first Gray Catbird back this year in my backyard.

My catbird pair has loved the woods bordering the marsh and would kindly let me see them briefly, even for a shot maybe, before disappearing yet again.  I enjoyed those very quick meet-ups!

This day was no exception, but I do think he hung juuuust a little longer to say “Hi” and let me know he was back! 😉

Now if only he’d jump to another branch in the sunlight before disappearing on me….

Ahhhh, there we go!

  1. Lucky you or are you a bird whisperer? There’s been many a time I’ve asked male cardinals to turn sideways so their eye does not get sucked into the black hole of their head. They act like they just can’t hear or understand me.

  2. He’s very cute and those dark eyes look so attentive – you captured him beautifully Donna. I have never seen a Gray Catbird before so I’m happy to see one here.

    • Thank you, Linda! The catbirds are very secretive. When you’re walking this Spring and near thicket/bushes, and you think you happen to hear a kitty cat meowing, that most likely is not a cat but the Gray Catbird! My first time ever seeing one, I heard this poor kitty cat meowing it’s heart out. I thought it was in the thicket stuck and got so worried. I kept looking for it to help it. Well, out popped this new bird to me! Got photos of course, and was very relieved I didn’t have to call someone to help rescue! 😂

      • That is amazing Donna – thank you for the tip. I wondered why they called it a Catbird! I will definitely have my ears tuned to hear it – I hope I am lucky enough to hear one. It’s like the first time I ever heard a squirrel noise when they are upset about something – I swiveled my head around, having never heard that distress call before! I sounds like they are in pain and, like you, I was worried something was hurt up in the tree, likely a cat.
