Bald Eagles in Flight
We have Bald Eagles year-round, but the number increases substantially with migratory Alaska and Canada eagles here for the winter.
Blackwater NWR’s annual eagle count on January 13th recorded a record-breaking 329 Bald Eagles on the refuge property. When I was down there couple weeks ago…..oh my! They were truly everywhere.
Here’s a few in flight shots.

It’s always great to catch them in flight like this. Nice shots.

Thank you, Reed, I agree! You’d get your fill of them at Blackwater NWR right now, they are everywhere!
Beautiful. We had one hanging out on our property last week. It was feasting on a deer that had been killed by an automobile across the road from us.
Thank you, Curt! They certainly won’t miss out on a good roadkill. I see them a lot on roadkill, then there’s a bunch of vultures further back, waiting for their turn.
I wondered at the time where the vultures were? 😳 But it’s easy to see why the eagle would be top bird. Kind of like the lions take priority over vultures in Africa!
Wow, such a magnificent bird and your captures in flights are truly amazing. (Suzanne)
Thank you, Suzanne!
My those are amazing! There must be enough food to feed so many on the reserve or do they come begging humans?
Thank you, Sandy! The refuge is primarily marsh and open waters where they hunt and fish to their hearts content. Waterfowl is quite abundant.
These are nice! I particularly like the second image.
Thank you, Belinda!
A majestic bird Donna and beautifully captured. That is a great count for this bird. We are trying to get our eagle population back after most of them were killed years ago because of a bounty on their heads.
Thank you, Ashley! We had the pesticide problem years ago, but thankfully our population has made a good comeback. Fingers crossed for yours!
What a thrill it must be to see so many all in one area. Wonderful shots, Donna!
Goose-bump thrill! 😊 Thank you, Eliza!
Brilliant shots, Donna 👍👍👍
