Canada Geese – Drinking In Unison
Photographing this pair of Canada Geese drinking water, I got lucky when they drank in unison.Β The reflections were a bonus.

It is refreshing to see birds and other wildlife quench their thirst.Β π
An interesting fact, Canada Geese mate for life!
This is a unique series of photos, Donna, and I so enjoyed it. Interesting that they’re in unison, and a nice illustration at the end of how birds have to use gravity to swallow water. Wonderful photos.
Thank you, Jet, it’s a joy to watch birds’ behavior, seeing something cool happen. Especially with they’re having just two limbs to work with, quite impressive.
Nice! I just wonder how much water they get from each dipp. Must be hard with their long throats.
Thank you, Hans! Interesting thought. π
Great series, Donna…elegant birds!
Thank you, Indira! My next post is of this same pair, maybe not so elegant. You decide! π π
Great images Donna! Synchronized Canada Geese drinking! They must practice a lot! Did not realize they mate for life!
Thank you, Reed! I remember thinking, oh I hope I’m in focus! π
Aw great capture! π
Thank you, Tanya! π
Aw, that’s cute, and the reflections are wonderful. I’ve heard that animals, where both male and female/ birds look alike mate for life and animals whose male and females look different like ducks, do not mate for life. It seems like there’s something to that being true.
Thank you, Deborah! I’ve not heard that before, but now I’m running that thought through my ‘bird’ brain, and it does seem to have some truth to that. Interesting, thanks for sharing!
Maybe nobody set up as a divorce lawyer yet… (I jest of corse). π
ππ
This proves the point that mating for life, drives you to drink!… Just a different angle. Great shots. Donna.:)
πππ€£ Thanks for the laugh, HJ, you cracked me up!!!
I liked HJ’s comment. π
It was a good one! π
Funny to see them synchronized! Fun captures, Donna
Thank you, Ellen!
What a great pair. Very nice, Donna!
Thank you, Belinda!
Lovely captures Donna, and nice reflections. It is always good when they drink in unity together you know it is peaceful there. Some of our waterbirds take turns with one watching while the other drinks or dives, in case predators are near.
Thank you, Ashley! That was what they were doing, one keeping an eye out. It was just me and them. They had learned to accept me over the previous days. π
I love Canada geese but, MAN can they be violent if you get too close to the nest.
These two look like they are smiling at your camera.
My buddy Ray works at IBM in security. The campus has a lake and a rather large population of geese. They have favorite nesting spots that they come back to. Ray told me about one male that lost his mate and he continues to return to the nesting site…waiting…every year. That’s just pitiful to me.
Yes, geese can be nasty if they think you’re too close. If you run, they will chase you, and ‘goose’ you. Always a fun phrase, ‘going to goose you’ but a real goosing nip/bite would certainly hurt.
I’ve seen Canada Geese wait endlessly for a mate, one time mourn alongside a demised mate . It is very sad.
I’ve never been chased by a goose…thank goodness. I did grow up with them wandering over my grandmother’s farm (I may have expressed this, before…). My GM had a small farm on US70, central NC. There was a big pond across the highway (only two lanes at the time) and they would fly in. They would land all over the farm in droves and slowly waddle their way to the water…pooping all over the farm and…backing up traffic on US70. LOL!
I tell you one thing…after years and years of my GM’s chicken farm (long gone before I came along) and the goose poop, that land was SO fertile. You could grow anything on it.
Have you ever known a goose to find a new mate? Or, do they mourn and stay single until death?
I don’t know any personal stories but I’m guessing after a few years, the lone mate would possibly bond with another. Let’s hope so! π
And I totally believe your GM’s farm being fertile!! π
That place would grow anything. Grass was thick. Bushes grew like crazy. She had amazing gardens, fruit trees, nut trees, grapevines…made her own wine. SO much knowledge…
Very nice click..Beautiful..
Thank you!

Beautiful reflections and synchronization. π
Thank you, Irene! π
Lovely photos with the synchronization and reflections. Canada geese do have their good points. they are so interesting to watch.
Thank you, Jane, yes they do. Respect them and be entertained! π
π
Synchronized drinking could be considered for an Olympic event. These geese certainly seem to have nailed it. I’d give them a ten.
Yay, a “10”! Yes, they had it going on together. π
So lovely photos Donna! Is Canada geese general in U.S? In Finland they are and you can find them everywhere, they love our parks in the cities as they pasture. Geese are protected but still some people in Finland would like to kill most of them (so sad).
Thank you, Minna! Yes, quite common and loads of them. They are hunted legally during the winter to help maintain populations. They are destructive on grass and farms, and leave a lot of ‘you-know-what’ everywhere to step in, yuk. BUT! To me, they are also fun and entertaining to watch, especially when the goslings are running around and growing up. π
It might the same in Finland also that the hunting must ne allowed. Otherwise the population will be too big. Goslings are SOOOO cute π€π₯π£
Amazing Canada Geese photos Donna, really enjoyed looking at these!
Thank you, Liz!
