Pileated Woodpecker In Hot Pursuit
.
I saw a flash of red followed by another shooting from tree to tree through the forest, a male Pileated Woodpecker in hot pursuit of a female.
.
Male Pileated Woodpecker (the red cheek stripe is the male identifier)
.
Ahhhh…..she’s just above him in this tree.Β Can he catch her?

Alas, the female was quicker on the move.Β Not giving up, the male continued the chase as they flew deeper into their forest playground.

Love these! I like how his crest is standing right up! The intensity of the look on his face in the second shot made me laugh out loud.
Thank you, Jane! His gal was really teasing him, playing catch-me-if-you-can, he was one excited guy! π
Beautiful pictures, Donna! I didn’t know about the red stripe of the male, but if I ever get a chance to look closely at a pileated woodpecker I will know the difference. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Susan! Glad to give you a tip on IDing!
Beautiful woodpecker, probably one the largest woodpecker of the world! Hope they are doing well as Slaty Woodpecker in this area is not so many.
Great capture Donna!
Thank you! They are doing well, living approx. across 2/3s of the U.S. Best to your Slaty Woodpecker for improvement in numbers.
Good to know that and GSW has a challenging time but hope they will be around, thanks
It’s a LOOOOOOVE dance! I love his mohawk.
And the forest was their stage! He’s sporting his Santa hat. hehe

Thank you, Gunta! He has that ‘look’ in his eye!! π
In that second photo he definitely looks like he’s not giving up on the chase!
As far as I could tell, he didn’t. They continued to fly all around the forest, what fun!
Great photos, Donna! Procreation continues onward… his eye reveals his intent!
Thank you, Barbara! Love was definitely in the air that morning. π

These woodpeckers looks so bad-assed with their red mohawk!
Especially as large as these woodpeckers are! π
He’s ‘twitter-pated!’ π
Most definitely! Just look at that intent! π
Fabulous, and wonderful colours too. Love the red tuft, makes him look like he’s done his hair up, ready for a night out (or in this case, day out!).
Thank you, Sel! He was ready to strut his stuff! π
Superb photographs, Donna!
Gini calls these “modern-day Pterodactyls”.
Thank you, Wally! As fast as they played, I really got lucky with those two shots. π
