American Alligator Takes a Turtle

.

(Warning – this post contains graphic photos)

I was watching this alligator glide ever so slowly across the water and liked the reflections.  While taking the photo, I saw a turtle’s head sticking out of the water.

I continued to snap photos just as the turtle disappeared at the same time the alligator’s tail engaged its power.  I’ll share just a few photos of the action.

Just as quick, the splashing stopped.  The alligator resurfaced with the turtle in it’s mouth, and slowly swam towards and disappeared in the mangroves.

We can’t help but feel bad for the turtle, but this is the cycle of life.  And an example at how fast and violent an alligator can be.  If you come upon a alligator, please respect it and keep your distance.  It will take what it wants.

  1. Oh those photos are very awesome! Great photos Donna! …and I will keep my distance nice time I see an alligator! (but I do like to see them anytime I find an opportunity)

  2. I’m sorry for the turtle. I guess it was its time to go. Anything can happen in the wild side! Good series, Donna. 🙂

    • Thank you, Ted! It certainly caught me off-guard that the gator would go after the turtle, but glad I kept my finger on the trigger. I had watched that gator off and on for almost an hour, never moving and then he started his prowl. Still gives me goosebumps!

    • Thank you, Eliza! I too wondered if by chance the gator could have just set the turtle down and not fooled with it back in the mangroves, since the turtle looked to still be in tact when the gator swam away. Yes, with that psi, it’s actually amazing to think the gator controlled his jaws so well to capture and not crush the turtle instantly.

We’ll go with the thought the turtle got away! 🙂

  3. What a great sequence Donna! No one ever said nature wasn’t cruel, but I don’t think nature is evil. That seems to be something that humans alone possess. Maybe??
