Fox Sparrow
Fox Sparrows winter over the eastern half and southwestern portions of the United States, but finding them isn’t so easy with their hiding skills.
Having seen a Fox Sparrow only a few times (and poorly photographed once), I was truly excited when I heard one chirping in the marsh reeds while recently birding Claiborne Landing just a few miles from me.
I was birding from my car and then saw it fly across the road from one side of the marsh to the other side. Birds were moving around and it followed, going back to my driver’s side. “Thank you”, I said!
I made some “phish phish phish” sounds and out *popped* my beautiful Fox Sparrow for just a few seconds!

I said “thank you thank you” again as I pulled away,
‘cuz this beautiful Fox Sparrow made my day!

Wonderful photos Donna
Thank you, Sheree!
Not sure I’ve ever seen one. Very pretty bird, thanks.
Thank you, Ted! They tend to be more on the ground level and blend in perfectly with fallen leaves. 🙂
😊 my kind of bird
So excited for you! You not only captured it well but you got it from all sides. 👏
Thank you, Pepper! I gotta give the sparrow a big thanks for it’s modeling skills! 😁
Love those markings. They are said to pass through Massachusetts for a short time in spring and fall, but I have never seen one.
In the woods, look for them foraging on the ground in the leaves. They camouflage so perfectly, it makes them hard to spot. I hope you see one this coming Spring!
The greater Houston area is in the Fox Sparrow’s winter range – I’ve never seen one, you can bet I’ll be channelling your birding expertise to try to find one! Lovely photos really captured the color well – nice work!
Thank you, Sam! Wishing you luck in finding your first one!
Ah, this is a sparrow amongst a million. It’s feathers are gorgeous. The colours of a fox coat. Hard to believe. Congratulations on these fine photographs!
Thank you, Sandy! It was brief, but what a thrill it gave me in that clicking moment!
Terrific photographs of this handsome sparrow! I’m always impressed by how large they seem when compared to other sparrows.
Thank you, Wally!
Yes. It is beautiful.
Thank you!
Beautifully sharp photos, Donna!
Beautiful shots. Great bird!
Thank you!
Thank you, Belinda!
Beautiful captures, Donna. One handsome dude!
Donna – what a cutie pie this little Fox Sparrow is and weren’t you lucky seeing it right up close and personal and it liked your voice as well. 🙂
Donna. I don’t even have much patience for photographing birds. I’m calling you the bird whisperer. Girl , you rock with birds!
