Pileated Woodpecker

Sometimes my get-around choice for birding when we’re RVing is a relaxing ride in my birding-mobile (golf cart) with cameras in tow, enjoying the scenery and looking for the ‘locals’.

Early this morning, I ventured off this way to see who I could find around Everglades City (golf carts allowed everywhere except Rt 29, how cool!).

One of the ‘locals’ that love the palm trees is the Pileated Woodpecker.

These are photos of a male, identified differently from the female by the red stripe on his cheek.

Flash back in time.  Do you remember the cartoon character, Woody Woodpecker?  He was created by Walter Lantz and designed after the Pileated Woodpecker.

Yep, took those two photos from my birding-mobile!  It’s been a couple years since I last shared a photo.  I love and have a lot of fun with it; and as long as I don’t get off, the birds aren’t bothered any more than with a car.

Can you see me cruisin’ the streets, looking for the ‘locals’?  😊

I hope I made you chuckle!  Now go have one of those silly, crazy, Woody Woodpecker kind of days….  Wha ha hahaha! Wha ha hahaha! Hahahahahahahaha!

  1. I have heard mixed details. when I looked it up a while ago, I read that Woody was styled after a red-headed Woodpecker. Years before that, it was a Pileated. Pileated makes more sense to me.Great shots!

  2. Donna, the Woody photos are so beautiful! So is your birding cart. I’m glad this bird isn’t pecking on my palms. 😎 I totally remember watching Woody Woodpecker as a child! Good memories. 🥰

    • Thank you, Ashley! Amazing how he flew all around me from tree to tree without a worry of me. I love my bird-mobile, and sure beats long walking when I don’t have to! 🙂

    • I think they are the most majestic of all the woodpeckers, and definitely a very swift flier as you say! And when they perch, they don’t stay still either lol. I felt very thankful to see him and he fly to me for these wonderful opportunities. 🙂

  3. Wow! What sharp, crisp photos of this beautiful bird! Thanks for sharing! I sat out on our back step this morning photographing a pair of bluebirds at our bluebird house and the morning sun lit them up perfectly, so I can appreciate how great the lighting was for your pileated woodpecker. Thanks for sharing!

    • Thank you, Susan! I’m a slow riser to get out, but when I do, I am always so happy to start my day out birding with the best light of the day. As you know! Yay, the Bluebirds are back for you!! 🙂

  4. Do you know something? I think that having too much fun is getting you to lose your mind! By the way, the golf cart is a great idea! I missed you, my friend. 🙂

  5. Fun post Donna! I giggled out loud quite a few times! Amazing pictures! You have the coolest “birding cart” ever!
