Red-bellied Woodpeckers
.
I heard a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers calling to each other from our camp site, and found the male at the top of a palm tree frond spike.

I heard the female in the old pine tree.ย It took a bit but I finally found his gal.

Both sexes have the red belly.ย The actual difference between the two, the male has a red crown and nape, the female has the red nape only.

Amazing shots! Was the male eating something or just clinging up high?
Thank you, Hien! He was just viewing around and calling out really, really loud to his mate. Maybe she was taking too long eating in the pine tree….. ๐
Cute couple! We had a male who used to visit our suet feeder. He would always announce his arrival before landing on it. I learned to recognize his call. I love your photo of the female in the tree. Beautiful!
Thank you, Barbara! They do let you know they are ‘here’! ๐ And loudly, lol.
Nice Donna! Always fun to see and photograph woodpeckers!
Thank you, Reed!
Great captures, Donna. ๐
Thank you, HJ! ๐
Amazing captures, Donna!!
Thank you, Isabel!
It’s great you can tell them apart. I can’t do that yet…
When they’re moving about, sometimes I can’t tell if I can’t see the top of the head, I discover later in my photos. ๐
Just catching up on your Florida images. Wow! What a great collection of quality photographs showing off some of our state’s birds!
Sunset over the Myakka River is quite special.
Thank you, Wally! Florida is indeed a magical paradise of birds and wildlife! ๐
I do love the colours in this stunning bird Donna, well captured ๐
Thank you, Ashley! ๐
Sweet captures, Donna. I love the way these birds announce themselves by calling, “Dirt-dirt-dirt!” like a scolding housemaid. ๐
Thank you, Eliza! They do let you know they’re around, I giggled at your ‘scolding housemaid’, good one! ๐
It looks like the male is getting a good lay of the land ๐. Very nice!
Just like a guy would! ๐ Thanks, Belinda! ๐
Such a pretty bird. Thanks for sharing. We don’t see them in our yard very often.
Thank you, Susan!
They are so cute.
Yes they are! ๐
i love the Red Bellies. Is that a palm tree in the background? Different for me in the north woods! Gorgeous!
Thank you, Sheila! Yes, that’s a palm tree, we’ve been camping in Florida this month. ๐
The second shot is so amazing! Well done Donna! Beautiful woodpecker ๐
Thank you very much, Minna! ๐
Your images of them are just beautiful like them. ๐
Thank you very much, Deborah! ๐
Super charming and delightful, Donna.
Thank you very much, Imorgana! โค
I have these birds at my feeder sometimes. ๐๐ป I thought they were called Flickers? ๐ Very nice Donna.
Thank you, Al! You were close! Flickers are woodpeckers too, but they are brown. ๐
Beautiful captures, as always! ๐ค
Thank you, Gunta! ๐
Nice captures! We used to see a lot of these back in Jersey’s Pinelands but I don’t think we have them here.
Thanks, Denise! They aren’t considered year-round in Colorado but are sighted often to the east of I-25 per eBird. ๐
I am way west of I-25 … it is flat on that eastern part of the state. Maybe they don’t like mountain life.
