Great Blue Heron in the Mangroves
.
This Great Blue Heron was moving slowly through the dark waters, looking for fish at the roots within the shaded mangroves. A couple times s/he came into an opening where natural lighting filtered through, giving me two wonderful image opportunities.

Such a beutiful light, almost like a soft flash, Nice!
Thank you, Hans! I was watching those lit spots for it to pass through as it winded through the roots, Shame s/he didn’t stop for a profile shot! lol But I’ll take them!! π
The light and detail are wonderful, Donna!
Thank you, Belinda!
Super Fotoπππ
Thank you, Werner!
Donna, these are beautiful!!
Thank you, Susan!
Stunning photo Donna in breeding plumage. Love the way you captured the light on the subject π
Thank you, Ashley! I was rewarded beautifully, as I hoped it would walk in those sunlight spots. π
Donna, you must have so much patience. Impressive. π
Thank you, Irene! I love trying to ‘be invisible’ and wait for the shot. AND no one else in around to mess up the op!! π
Beauties!
Thank you, Carol!
The GBH is one of the coolest wader birds I know, I like them a lot. You have photograph this dude, very nicely, excellent “chiaroscuro” effect, Good job, Donna. π π
Ooooh, I love that word, HJ! Thank you, they do strut their stuff elegantly and give gorgeous profiles, I love them too. π
Wearing a feather boa while hunting…how fashionable.
To each it’s own, eh? hehe
Exactly! π
i am way behind in my email, slowly catching up. Great light and setting in these two photos, Donna.
Thank you, Jane! We all get behind, no worries! I always enjoy when you visit.
I love herons, the are so nice and not to difficult to spot.
Thank you, Rudi, me too. Great for practice shots and learning to be patience ourselves. π
I love seeing Herons. Great photography
Thank you!
Beautiful images Donna!
Thank you, Reed!
Great timing! The sunlight is perfect. Like a soft spotlight aimed right at the heron’s head.
Thanks! I was actually surprised with that ‘spotlight’ effect on the one when viewing the photos. π
I am waiting for some decent light to go and take some more photos – of herons, birds, anything! Meanwhile yours are filling the gap nicely! I love the plumage and the way these herons can look so different – sometimes smooth, sometimes tufted, sometimes neat, sometimes bedraggled etc…
Thank you much, Sel, I hope you make it out real soon! It is amazing how many feathers they have when they display them fluffed up! And the colors, yes!
Those are beautiful looks at that Blue Heron, Donna. My favorite of the two is the first image.
Thank you, Deborah! They are big but oh-so beautiful!
What a beautiful bird! I love the setting and the lighting, and the how deep the water must be judging by how high it comes up to on its legs.
Thank you, Barbara, this turned out well, I was glad I waited for these.
