Osprey vs Eagle

With both the Eagles and Osprey nesting across the creek from each other, they are both soaring in the same sky space.

This doesn’t always sit so well, if it’s at the same time.

Being the underdog, it is the Osprey that gets defensive and chases the Eagle, who just flies away faster, trying to avoid those extended Osprey talons.

Osprey vs Bald Eagle

No one gets hurt, and I’ve told them to keep it that way.  We can all live together and get along!

  1. I’m always surprised that the ospreys can chase away the eagles, but what you captured in your great shot is what I have also witnessed.

    • I’ve seen this occur so many times, the Osprey becoming very territorial around their nest, with any Eagles passing by. It can’t be helped lol. We do have large numbers of both raptors nesting on the eastern shore of MD/around the Chesapeake Bay, don’t we?!! πŸ™‚

      • Yes we do! And I am somewhat concerned about the extreme winds that are due to arrive in our area tomorrow afternoon and evening, with gusts in some areas above 50. I sure hope that doesn’t wreak havoc on the nests. I remember 3-4 years ago when heavy storms came through and blew away some great blue heron nests as well as osprey nests. Fingers crossed!!

        • Fingers crossed and saying prayers. It is devastating to see and know it’s happening. Many years back, with my binoculars I watched an Osprey nest at CBEC across from our condo get wiped out, and it had chicks too. I remember tearing up, it upset me so much. πŸ™

    • Yes, I mentioned in the very beginning, they are nesting across the creek from each other. On the Eastern Shore Maryland , we have large numbers of both Eagles and Osprey, so they are always crossing paths and nesting near each other. Here, our Osprey are bad-ass, lol. Our Osprey will go after an Eagle just passing nearby in the sky and can quickly catch up with it, basically trying to force it away. I’ve watched aerial fights between the two if the Osprey starts attacking, forcing the Eagle to fight back. But 99% of the time, the Eagle picks up speed and gets the heck out of there, with the Osprey then retreating and going back to the nest or nearby perch, quite proud of itself. πŸ™‚

  2. That is so unique! I have never seen Ospreys near Bold Eagles. Donna, this is a breathtaking moment and so beautifully captured!!!

    • Thank you, and great eye! Yes, the eagle is much bigger, 6-7.5 ft wingspan/8-14 lbs vs the Osprey’s 5′ wingspan/3-4 lbs. Our Osprey are pretty good underdogs, they don’t take no stuff from another bird! πŸ™‚
