The Tricolored Heron is elegant in its blue-gray, lavender and white plumage. And what a beautiful red eye.

Ah, bird love is in the air in the Everglades!
I know how quick these birds are, darting here and there while hunting, so kudos on some really nice photos!
Thank you! Yes, they do like to move quick and not pose. 🙂
I am in awe of your shots. I thought I was going to love the head shot the best until I scrolled down to the next one with its reflection. Now I can’t decide. 😁
Thank you, Irene! 😍 The photo opportunities down here right now are unbelievable. I can’t pick favorites on any of them, just too many!
Enjoy! 😊
Beautiful bird, looks a bit closer to Wester Reef egreet in some poses. A beautiful bird.
Thank you, Hiren! I just looked at images of the Western Reef Egret, awesome!
Very nice captures, Donna. I do love the Tricolors, and looking pretty fancy here!
Thank you, Ellen! They’ve been a little harder to find for photo ops but worth the search! 🙂
You caught their special look here, nice shots. If you are around them in the fall the juveniles have a spectacular rust and brown shading. I always thought these were the most striking Herons, and you caught that.
Thank you, Ted! I’ll go back into my older files & look at my shots of them, see if I have any juveniles in the fall, but I don’t think so. They head further south from us in the mid-Atlantic for the fall/winter. Something for me to look for in the future for sure, thanks for the tip!
I absolutely adore their color. When we’d visit the Gulf Coast, coming across one of these was always a special treat.
They are quite elegant and indeed a special treat any time seen. 🙂
Beautiful series of Tricolored Heron images Donna!
Thank you, Reed!
That’s a beauty and you’ve photographed him beautifully, Donna. Such pretty coloring.
Thank you, Jane! I’ve enjoyed trying to capture their lovely colors. 🙂
An elegant heron, Donna! Outstanding series!!
Thank you so much, Indira!!
What a beautiful bird! Awesome photos! I especially like the ones with the water in the background.
Thank you, I was thrilled to get so many opportunities with this colorful heron! 🙂
Especially like your close-up portrait shot Donna! A few years ago I was able to photograph a dozen or more that were hanging out at your old stomping grounds: Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. It was a great experience to see them in this region. Haven’t heard of them returning to CBEC since then. However, our friendly and cooperative Great Blue Heron at Centennial Lake in Columbia has been giving us photographers “up north” some nice fishing and portrait photo ops.
Thank you, Steve! I just emailed you little while ago after reviewing your stunning GBH portraits, like minds think alike! 🙂 Yes, I’ve seen TCHs around CBEC and at Blackwater, although haven’t heard at either place recently. Always a treat to see them! 🙂
Like the highlights and colour-quite a striking bird.
Thank you, Jane, they are indeed striking!
A handsome one. You’re posed to get some good photos of breeding plumage and behavior.
Thank you, Eliza! I’ve been wondering when things will start ‘heating up’, all the males are already chasing the females everywhere. I’m hoping to get to see plumage changes before we leave in a few weeks. They better hurry up! 😉
Love the reflection in the second shot. Such beautiful, dainty herons. Nice work! William — “What a wildly wonderful world, God! You made it all, with Wisdom at Your side, made earth overflow with your wonderful creations.” Psalms 104 The Message
Thank you, William! I’ve had to search for them, I’ve found a location that is working for great photo ops. Wonderful scripture, thank you for sharing!
What a beauty he is and your captures are magnificent, Donna. The one who comes past our house, never stops for a photo op. He’s always on a mission.
Thank you, Sylvia! Well, we’ll just have to have a word with your TCH, he doesn’t realize the wonderful lake you have to fish in! 🙂
I would love to have a chat with him if only he’d slow down a bit. 😅
Wow!! Love all images of the Tricolored Heron. Thanks for sharing, Donna
Thank you, Isabel, and you’re most welcome!!
Elegant indeed. Lovely photos, Donna!
Thank you, Belinda!
A heron is a bird that cannot be photographed too often. Thank you Donna.
They really do create beautiful poses with their long necks twisted and tucked. Amazing birds! Thanks Tom!
Love those sunrise shots Donna, you really bring our the character of the bird. 🙂
Thank you, Ashley! We all love that morning light!! 🙂
excellent shots Donna! I’ve never heard of this Heron before? Beautiful creature!
Thank you, Wayne!
The colors are really incredible! We also don’t have this type of heron here, so it’s a treat to view them here 🙂
Thank you, Takami! Not too many birds get billed with one of their colors being lavender! 🙂 I just love that color and was excited to get several opportunities with these gorgeous herons.
Fantastic!
