Great Blue Heron

Chesapeake Farms includes a 40-acre marsh that is scattered with tree stumps and logs.  Perfect habitat perches for birds.

I came to a slow stop when I spotted this Great Blue Heron as he walked along a log.

And then the sun broke through the clouds, yes!

The heron departed the log and kept on with its slow pace, stalking the waters.

Capturing the classic ‘one-foot up’ stalking pose is always a bonus!

This heron knew exactly where s/he was going, to a fishing hole to the right of the above photo.  Breakfast time!

  1. It looks rather scary with its foot in midstride like that and that fierce look of determination on its face! I don’t see these guys as often as I did when I lived in Calif. It’s always a treat to see them. I love your series here!!

  2. There’s just something about a great blue heron! I can’t wait to get to this farm – hopefully next week.

    • I totally agree, Susan! Even more so, the GBH was my Mom’s favorite bird, so they are extra special to me now. I hope you make it to the farm. I had to drive to/from Delaware today so passed the entrance twice. My car went straight but my mind really wanted to turn in both times. 😉

    • Thank you so much, Eliza! They were one of my first birds I practiced with photography because of their patience. I learned a lot about being patient myself with them! 🙂
