Leave Nothing But Footprints – #3 Duck Inn Trail, Eastern Neck NWR

This is my contribution for Heaven’s Sunshine’s weekly challenge, “One Step At A Time”.

So come along and hike with me, one step at a time!

Duck Inn Trail, Eastern Neck NWR, Rock Hall, MD (one of six trails at the refuge)
1.1 miles round trip

It’s a cool March afternoon, and all is quiet except for an occasional honking of a nearby Canada Goose.  The smell of fresh pine fills the air as we stroll along.

Reaching the end of the trail, there is a view of the Orchard Point Oyster Company oyster farm on the Chester River.

Do you like oysters?  I do not.

We turn around to retrace our steps back to our car.

Wait a minute. Do you hear a woodpecker drilling?

Hairy Woodpecker

That was a nice surprise!

Take a hike, short or long, one step at a time.
Mother Nature promises to reward you.

And please remember~~
Leave nothing but footprints.
Kill nothing but time.

  1. It looks like a great place to take a walk. No, I don’t really care for Oysters. Thankfully, there’s other seafood I do really like and choose those over Oysters. The Hairy Woodpecker was a great sighting. The image is wonderful.

    • Thank you, Deborah! This refuge was one of my go-to birding places in 2021-2023, I even volunteered at this refuge during then, love this refuge.
I cannot do oysters lol, but I love most all other seafood too!

  2. That looks like a lovely hike, Donna. And of course you found a bird along it. In fact, I’m surprised you only found one! As for oysters, I’m right there with you!

  3. I am not a fan of oysters either – perhaps it is an acquired taste? The Hairy Woodpecker would lure me to seek it out. I’ve never seen one, just a Downy which looks so similar. I could smell that pine and hear that honking Canada Goose. 🙂

I really like this tagline Donna:
    And please remember~~
    Leave nothing but footprints.
    Kill nothing but time.

    • Happy you strolled along with me, Linda, and felt the vibe; and for liking my tagline. I was happy that Hairy drilled, makes it easier to find them. Chesapeake oysters are a big deal here, we have festivals and buffets for them. People stand in line to get freshly shucked ‘oyster shooters’, swallowing shucked raw oysters whole. Yuk! I don’t know how anyone can like them; but I have many friends who do! To each their own, right?! 😁

      • Yes, I like your tagline very much Donna. Nothing like a drilling woodpecker to send your head swiveling. I couldn’t eat oysters like that – no that would not be for me. Friends of the family asked me to travel with them to Spain – she was from there and I spent three weeks with them in 1974 traveling around the country. They loved fish and we went to all kinds of small, out-of-the-way fish places and I had a real difficult time being polite. 🙂 I didn’t like fish with the head still on, or not fileted and I had to debone them on my plate and I hated the bouillabaisse soup with fish heads and clams floating around in it … that I had to say no to. My parents were not fish eaters, except during Lent on Fridays we had salmon croquettes, tuna casserole or Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks (the latter more for my benefit when I was young). 🙂
