Darling Donkey With A Message

Just a mile down the road from us lives an adorable donkey on a small farmstead that I always looked for on my passing by.

If you stop, (s)he’ll come over to the road to say hello.

American Kestrels

This past winter, I was fortunate to know an area in Everglades City where I could find American Kestrels, North America’s littlest falcon.

Here’s another series of this colorful, adorable falcon from my collection.

The warming days of Spring are bringing about the flurry of birds this past month.

Off To See The Lizard

“Off to see the lizard…..”  (lyrics by Jimmy Buffett)

You can go just about any where in southwest Florida and see both Brown Anoles and Curlytail Lizards scurrying at your feet, or on door/window screens, trees, plants; you might even find one that slipped into your home!

Harmless, but they always did startle me each time I’d see one.

My hand at shots of these little 5-11″ prehistoric-looking critters the past couple months…..

And by the way, don’t try to catch one.  If you do, their tail might fall off; and it will keep wiggling!

This is actually its defense mechanism to attract the predator’s attention so the lizard itself can hopefully scurry away to safety.  And, yes, s/he will grow a new tail!  😊

Great Egret – Head Dive

This Great Egret stalked towards me in the dark waters of the Fakahatchee Strand, looking for a meal.

Beginning to pass me by, s/he froze and ever so slowly stretched that neck out…..way out.

A quick gulp, and then the Great Egret continued its stealth stalking past me without a glance my way.

Osprey Chicks and Nests

Soon as we arrived in Everglades City first of January, I quickly took notice of their half dozen or so Osprey nests throughout the town, observing females were already incubating/brooding.

At the end of March before leaving, the chicks were practically full grown.

Everglades City Osprey Chicks

At home around the Chesapeake Bay, our female Osprey are just now beginning to lay their eggs.  😲

The Osprey in Everglades City had some interesting nests.  One Osprey nest platform idea in Florida is the use of old satellite dishes.  Holes are drilled for drainage and then they’re erected on poles, providing ample room for a growing family.  What an awesome idea to recycle old dishes!

And to finish up my Florida Osprey, a final capture of a male at sunset, watching over his family.

Male Osprey

I’m missing these Florida Osprey, but am delighted to see an adult pair fishing the lake at our present location in SC.  And soon, I’m hoping we’re able to return home to see our Chesapeake Bay Osprey who arrived mid-March and are in the process of laying eggs now!

Another Osprey With A Fish

Another day, another male Osprey is perched with its latest catch.

As he eats the head (a common practice by males before taking the balance to the nest), the Osprey’s mate is crying on the nest, demanding he bring the fish to her and the chicks.

He obviously hears her.  We all hear her.

And over my head he went, straight to the nest, to the awaiting, hungry family.

Osprey Splash and Two Fish Catch

I didn’t see this Osprey preparing to dive directly above me between the mangroves.

But I heard the splash!

Luckily I was able to shoot these two full frame photos as the Osprey was already lifting out.

Osprey lifting out…..was it successful?

With the mangroves surrounding us both, the Osprey was quickly out of my sight.  I watched for it to rise above the trees to see if it fished successfully.

Most definitely!  The Osprey caught two fish!

Both the Osprey and I got lucky!  😉
